2020: BlackRock Real Assets contributes to NGP’s breakthrough in the solar panel industry at 8% record high market share

Apple Daily – Wu Guozhong

In 2020,due to the pandemic, Taiwanese solar panel industries faced its first recession in history, causing installments todecline. Infolink predicted a single year’s solar panel capacity to be 1.2 GW, but New Green Power was able to break through these challenging times, with a single year’s grid surpassing 100 MW,as well as their market share reaching a new record of 8%. Additionally, BlackRock Real Assets became anew strategic partner and the first huge foreign equity investor to New GreenPower last September.

Chairman and General Manager of New Green Power Tang Menghanstates that BlackRock Real Assets becoming a strategic partner helps better improve New Green Power as a credible renewable energy and electrical industry. The Company plans to make effective use of renewable resources, strengthen company legitimacy, create customer-valued products, establish efficient teams, and have at least 1 GW worth of power plants within 3-5 years. At the same time, the company also wants toaccelerate their expansion into new markets, prioritize sustainable development, and globalize their brand.

The government actively promotes the goal of a nuclear-free country by 2025.According to data from the Bureau of Energy and Ministry of Economic affairs, as of the end of October last year, the capacity of solar panels reached a total of 5.2 GW, which is still a distance away from the goal of 20 GW by 2025. Additionally, domestic terms for large electricity users are set to officially start New Year’s Day, mandating that those that use 5000 kW of power within 5 years are required to use green energy for at least 10% of this amount. Once in effect , the policy will set a foundation for domestic demand business in renewable energy.

The council of agriculture amended the uses of agricultural land in July last year. This conflicted with solar panel development in all areas except for rooftop type installment. In 2021,New Green Power will focus more on the symbiosis between fishery and electricity. Starting in 2018, the company completed Taiwan’s first fishery and electricity plant in Chiayi .In the future they plan to further cooperate with government policies to better promote floating type installment.

New Green Power and their professional teams completed many targeted installments, including the year’s largest single rooftop model installment in Kaohsiung CSBC Corporation, a ground-based case of private land in Taiwan’s Yunlin Kouhu Lake, floating type for a Qianfengzi Detention Basin, Taiwan’s largest floating type in Chiayi and much more. Having multiple models for the installment of solar panels not only helps get over difficulties in a singular model, but also can lessen the need for regulation adjustment on installments. At the same time, multiple models can draw up various types of installation experiences to implement for the future.

A new valuable floating type for a flood-detention basin was completed and connected to the grid in September 2020. Taiwan is small and crowded, developing the floating type can prevent potential land conflict and lessen the environmental impact on water. At the same time, it can also raise the electrical efficiency and lessen the heating of water and eutrophication. However, because the floating type has the highest technical threshold of the three, there are fewer investors in this field.

New Green Power has completed many floating type since 2018’s Yongan Detention Basin. The finished Xinwen Detention Basin of 2020 became the largest floating type solar panel installment currently in Taiwan. However, the Company faced many ecological issues during development and maintenance. Although the area is not within the range of national wetlands, it is still in the range of some containing small conservation habitats for Terns and other various waterfowl, such as Stilt Plovers, Eastern Ring-necked Plovers, and Crested Pochards.

To maintainthese precious species, New Green Power had to consult an expert on bird ecology before starting to adjust the project schedule accordingly. The company was also required to keep the construction noise within 100 decibels of sound. This was to reduce the impact on bird breeding and brooding.Work stopped in the beginning of November 2019 and resumed in March 2020 in consideration for migratory birds and ecological conservation. During installment, the company also managed to have floating and all other equipment take up 30.4 hectares, not more than 50% of the total water area, which helped in achieving a balanced development between ecology and industry.

Through the operation of Xinwen Detention Basin, New Green Power not only received development in the professional and technical field, but also thought about actively contributing to the community. In addition to regular feedback, the Company also participated in local culture and festivities. Because of this, New Green Power cooperated with the local history and humanities to start a series of plans for the development of the salt industry and ecological resources. In addition to having more workshops with local people, the company also taught Xinwen Elementary School the importance of renewable energy, ecology, and wetlands, and painted works of art together. New Green Power also invited local elders to pick flowers and draw milkfish.

These works of art were put out for display in the community after being glazed and fired in akiln. They resonated with a lot of local citizens, who feel a connection with these pieces. Other works of art were also linked with local customs and placed near detention pondsand everywhere near Xinwen. New Green Power also created a community guide map and commentary, and built bird resting platforms. This caused a lot of tourist attractionthere.
